Container Gardening Secrets
May 6, 2008

Blueberries from a high-rise balcony? Of course! Strawberries from a windowbox? Why not? Reach outside your kitchen window and pick your own salad? Yep. Thanks to container gardening, it’s all possible, plus much more!
Maybe you love gardens but don’t have the space or the time to create one. Perhaps you’re like me - you grew up with a large backyard garden and miss the fun of growing your own vegetables. Some folks are looking for ways to grow organic fruits and veggies without paying through the nose for them at the store. Now you can eat fresh and healthy by making a garden on a smaller scale.
Enter the Container Garden.
Container Gardens aren’t really all that new, it’s just that the concept has expanded to include apartment dwellers, city folk, hi-rise residents, and yes, even the country homesteader!
The growing number of city gardeners reveals a major switch in gardening approach. No longer do people consider that growing trees, flowers, fruits or vegetables are undertakings suitable only for farmers. Through the magic of container planting, many city dwellers are enjoying growing part of their own food! And no wonder! There’s no digging, tilling, and little -if any- weeding to be done. Gardening in pots makes maintenance a snap!
Harvesting kitchen produce isn’t the only reason folks are creating container gardens. Pots of flowers and vines accent landscapes as well as offer a hint of the beautiful outdoors within arm’s reach.
Think of your fruit, flower, and veggie “pots” as a mobile garden, suitable for the deck, porch, balcony, driveway or yard!

What do you like to grow? Believe me, there’s no need to grow anything you or your family won’t eat or can’t stand to smell. Are you a flower lover? Do you enjoy cooking? Would you actually use the herbs you grow in your recipes? These are some questions to consider when planning what to plant in your container garden.
While gorgeous container garden photos grace the centerfolds of many a home magazine, setting up the exact look in the books may take some trial and error. If you go overboard, your lawn can end up looking like a mini-junkyard.
If you plan to go all out and plant produce - including staked tomatoes and pole beans, you may want to consider a backyard affair.
Where might your containers look best?
You could frame your doorway with two large containers of wave petunias.
How about hanging several baskets of geraniums on metal hanger trellises?
Imagine lining your terrace with clusters of pots of flowers and herbs!
Setting up your own container garden has never been easier with today’s plastic, clay, metal and concrete pots and specialty containers. Many folks recycle old tires and use them to hold miniature raised gardens. If you enjoy working with your hands, you might try making your own hypertufa pots! The list of potential containers to use is endless!
Some people even create them using rectangular boxes which are attached to the outside of the building just under their windows. Remember the historical pictures of the Hanging Gardens? Beautiful!
Sure, you can spruce up a patio or balcony, but don’t forget the great indoor container garden! A wide variety of plants and flowers that will accent your home can be grown in indoor containers.
