Garden Basics: Decor

Gardening
No garden is ever fully complete unless it has some type of decor included in it. In fact, many gardens actually get started because there was decor in place first. Someone may have gotten a garden bench or porch swing as a present for instance, and they loved sitting outside on it so much that they were inspired to put flowers, plants and other shrubs around to enhance their entire outdoor experience.

And that’s really what gardening is all about. It’s a celebration of mother nature, God’s gifts, beauty, serenity, peacefullness, color, texture, and so much more. So having a garden without some basic decor items is not really making the most of the garden you have.

Garden Potting Shed

Gardening
A garden potting shed is a must have accessory for any avid gardener. By putting a nice garden potting shed out in the back yard, gardeners in all areas of the country can enjoy gardening activities almost year round. A garden potting shed can be used for simple garden tool and supply storage, but it’s ideal for starting plants from seed, overwintering your flower bulbs, and sometimes even using as a small greenhouse to get a head start on springtime.

Potting sheds don’t have to be elaborate to be useful of course. Some gardeners have simple, small little tool type sheds or boxes in the backyard which they use for their gardening supplies. These smaller utility sheds are wonderful for keeping all of your garden tools together, and it also gives you a place to store extra gardening supplies such as empty garden pots, mulch, fertilizer, and potting soil.

If you have the opportunity and the space though, you really should buy or build a full fledged potting shed for exclusive gardening use. Once you’ve had a potting shed, you’ll really wonder how you were able to do without one for so long.

If your garden has oodles of shade, you can still make it appear green and inviting using such shade loving plants as hostas and ferns. Both are wonderful ornamental foliage plants that add grace and charm to any garden area, including in pots on patios and decks.

Hostas and ferns can be best enhanced by appropriate placement of landscape garden garden elements such as statuary, or a stone bench, brick walk or birdbath nearby (also known as hardscape). Such elements make a nice contrast to the rich, lush and graceful greenery that both ferns and hostas provide?just visualize yourself relaxing on a hot summer?s day on a stone bench set in a cool, soothing and serene border filled with hostas and ferns!

Creating a Salad Garden

Creating a Salad Garden

Gardening
Creating a salad garden is a wonderful adventure for both kids and adults, no matter how much gardening experience they might have. In fact, if you get the kids involved in creating a salad garden, they’re much more likely to eat the fresh vegetables that they’ve helped to grow.

There are no hard and fast rules for salad gardens either, because everyone likes different types of vegetables in their salad. There can be so much more to a salad than lettuce and tomatoes.

Now if you’re the type of person who prefers primarily lettuce and greens in your salad, then you might want to create a simple lettuce garden instead. This can be created in a container to sit outside on the patio, or to hang from the window in your kitchen. Or you can plant it outdoors in the ground if you’d prefer instead.

Garden Basics: Tools

Gardening
One of the most enjoyable parts of gardening is playing in the dirt. With your hands. And as you first start gardening, this is often what you do. There are no tools or gadgets to use, because our hands suffice just fine. As our gardens grow though, it can be helpful to pick up a few items to care for your garden. So here we’ll look at some of the most basic gardening tools that may be useful to you this year.

Garden Trowel - A garden trowel is simply a small hand held shovel which is useful for container gardening work, as well as working in smaller garden beds. A small trowel comes in handy for scooping soil out of a bag and into a pot, from one pot to another, or for digging small holes in the lawn to place starter seedling plants in.
